🚤 Outboard Repowering

Swapping an old outboard for a modern unit is the single most cost-effective upgrade for most boats under 40 feet. We handle transom assessment, engine selection, rigging, controls, and sea trial.

Transom Compatibility

Not every new engine fits every old boat. We measure transom height, width, and structural integrity to confirm your chosen horsepower and shaft length will mount safely. Transoms weakened by rot, corrosion, or previous stress fractures must be reinforced before repowering.

Horsepower Rating

Your boat's capacity plate specifies maximum horsepower. Exceeding this rating voids insurance and risks hull failure. We verify the hull's CE or NMMA rating and recommend the optimal horsepower within safe limits — often the maximum rated power for best performance and resale.

Weight Considerations

Modern 4-strokes are heavier than old 2-strokes. A 150 HP 2-stroke from 1995 may weigh 180 kg; a modern 150 HP 4-stroke EFI can weigh 220 kg. Extra weight on the transom changes trim, steering effort, and planing attitude. We calculate the impact and recommend trim tab or hydrofoil solutions if needed.

Controls & Rigging

Old cable controls rarely mate to modern electronic throttle systems. We replace control cables, steering, and instrument harnesses as part of the repower package. Digital gauges, trim indicators, and NMEA 2000 integration are standard on our installations.

Pro Tip: When repowering from 2-stroke to 4-stroke, your propeller will almost certainly be wrong. 4-strokes turn fewer RPM at WOT (typically 5,500–6,000 vs. 6,000–6,500 for 2-strokes) and need more blade area to absorb the torque. We include propeller selection and pitch testing in every outboard repower package.

⚓ Inboard Diesel Repowering

Inboard repowering is a major engineering project involving engine beds, transmission alignment, shaft coupling, exhaust, cooling, fuel, and electrical systems. We manage the entire project from removal to sea trial.

Critical: Inboard repowering is not a bolt-in swap. Engine bed bolt patterns, transmission SAE housings, flywheel diameters, crankshaft endplay, and torsional compatibility must all be verified before ordering. We perform a full engineering survey and provide a written compatibility report before any deposit is taken.

Engine Bed Fabrication

New engines rarely match old bed bolt patterns. We fabricate new engine beds from marine-grade aluminum or steel, glassed into the hull with proper load distribution. Beds must support the engine statically and dynamically without flexing or transmitting vibration to the hull.

Transmission Matching

The new engine's SAE flywheel housing, torsional characteristics, and power curve must match the existing transmission or a new transmission must be sourced. We perform torsional vibration analysis to ensure the crankshaft and gearbox input coupling are compatible. See our Transmissions FAQ for details.

Shaft & Propeller

A new engine may turn a different RPM range, requiring a new propeller or shaft diameter. We calculate the required propeller diameter, pitch, and blade count based on the new engine's power curve, gearbox ratio, and hull characteristics. Shaft alignment is verified with a dial indicator to 0.001" per inch of diameter.

Exhaust & Cooling

Modern diesels run higher exhaust temperatures and require larger wet exhaust risers. Cooling systems must be recalculated for the new engine's BTU output. We design and install the complete exhaust and cooling system, including raw-water strainers, seacocks, and heat exchangers.

Important: Crate engines are not "plug and play" in marine applications. Automotive ECUs are not waterproof, starters are not ignition-protected, and cooling systems are designed for radiators, not heat exchangers. Our marinization package includes every component needed for safe, reliable marine operation. Do not attempt to install a raw crate engine in a bilge without professional marinization.
