Marine Diagnostics & Electronics

Factory-level diagnostic tools, electronic troubleshooting, and marine electronics integration for outboards, inboards, generators, and control systems. We find faults that others miss.

Modern marine engines are computers with propellers. From EFI outboards to common-rail diesels, most failures start as electronic faults — sensor drift, injector imbalance, ECU calibration errors, or CANbus communication faults. Our technicians use manufacturer-grade scan tools, oscilloscopes, and pressure transducers to diagnose root causes, not just symptoms.

⚠️ Common Electronic Faults We Solve

Engine Starts Then Dies (EFI Outboards)

Often caused by a failing crankshaft position sensor, low fuel rail pressure, or an immobilizer handshake failure. We capture the event on a live data logger and compare fuel pressure, injector pulse width, and ignition timing against factory maps to isolate the drop-out cause.

Intermittent Overheating Warnings

Temperature senders drift over time, especially in saltwater. We compare the sender output against a calibrated digital thermometer and check the ECU's derate logic. A sender reading 5°C high can trigger false limp-home mode while the engine is actually safe.

Black Smoke & Poor Economy (Diesel)

Common-rail injectors wear internally, causing over-fueling or poor atomization. We perform injector leak-off tests, balance rates via scan tool, and measure rail pressure stability under load. A single failing injector can raise fuel consumption by 20%.

Control Lever Not Responding

Electronic throttle and shift systems (ZF SmartCommand, Mercury DTS, Yamaha CL5) rely on potentiometer or Hall-effect sensors in the lever. We test sensor linearity, CANbus message traffic, and actuator response latency to find whether the fault is in the lever, the ECU, or the actuator.

Generator Voltage Unstable

AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) faults, capacitor degradation, or diode bridge failures cause voltage swing. We load-bank the generator, capture the AVR control signal with an oscilloscope, and test excitation winding resistance to determine if the fault is electrical or mechanical.

NMEA 2000 Devices Drop Offline

Network backbone issues, power supply sag, or duplicate device addresses cause intermittent device dropout. We use a NMEA 2000 network analyzer to check bus voltage, message traffic, error frames, and termination resistance. A single bad T-connector can corrupt the entire network.

🛠️ Diagnostic Equipment

We invest in the same tools the manufacturers use — not generic OBD readers. This allows us to access proprietary codes, perform bi-directional actuator tests, and reflash ECUs where authorized.

📋 Diagnostic Process

1

Intake & History

We document symptoms, fault codes, recent maintenance, and operating conditions. The customer's description is 50% of the diagnosis.

2

Preliminary Scan

Factory scan tool connected. Active and pending codes read, freeze-frame data captured, and module communication verified.

3

Live Data Analysis

Engine run under load while monitoring 20+ parameters simultaneously. We look for sensors drifting out of sync or actuators not reaching target.

4

Physical Testing

Multimeter, oscilloscope, pressure transducer, and borescope used to verify what the computer is reporting against physical reality.

5

Root Cause Report

Written diagnosis with evidence: screenshots, waveforms, photos, and a clear explanation of the fault and repair required.

6

Repair & Verify

Component replaced or recalibrated. Post-repair scan confirms codes cleared, parameters in spec, and no new faults introduced.

💶 Diagnostic Pricing

Service Starting From Duration Includes

Note: Diagnostic fees are deducted from repair labour if you proceed with the recommended fix within 14 days. If no fault is found after thorough testing, the diagnostic fee covers our time and expertise. Travel costs apply for mobile diagnostics outside the Netherlands.

💡 Before Your Diagnostic Appointment

Bring your service history. Recent oil changes, filter replacements, and any previous fault codes help us spot patterns. A code that cleared itself last month often returns under the same conditions.
Do not clear the codes before arrival. Freeze-frame data (the snapshot of engine conditions when the fault occurred) is erased when codes are cleared. This data is often more valuable than the code itself.
Intermittent faults need time. If your engine only misbehaves after 2 hours of running, a 30-minute diagnostic may not capture it. We offer extended test-cell runs and data logging for elusive faults.
